About ZhongZe Gu

Zhongze Gu is currently the professor and the dean of School of Biological Science and Medical Engineering of Southeast University, the director of JITRI Institute of Biomaterials and Biomedical Devices.

Zhongze Gu is currently the professor and the dean of the School of Biological Science and Medical Engineering of Southeast University, and the director of JITRI Institute of Biomaterials and Biomedical Devices. He is an elected fellow of the American Institute for Medical and Biological Engineering (2020), the Royal Society of Chemistry (2020).

He graduated from Southeast University (China) in 1989 and got his M.S. degree in 1992 there. He received his Ph.D. degree in 1998 from the University of Tokyo. He started his academic career in 1998 in KAST as a researcher. From 2003, he has been a Cheung Kong Scholars Professor at Southeast University. His research interests include bio-inspired intelligent materials, colloidal crystals, and organ-on-a-chip.

Photonic Crystals

Natural structural color materials, especially those that can undergo reversible changes, are attracting increasing interest in a wide variety of research fields. Inspired by the natural creatures, many elaborately nanostructured photonic materials with variable structural colors were developed. These materials have found important applications in switches, display devices, sensors, and so on.

In our group, we focus on the research studies of Self-assembled Photonic Crystals (PhCs) and their Applications in Biomedical Analysis.

Laser 3D Printing

Innovation in the field of nanotechnology has promoted the development of artificially designed microstructures and nanostructures with controlled properties which can be defineded controlled microstructural architectures (CMAs).One of the challenges in this field is to realize the architectures with growing structural complexity and multilevel hierarchy.

In our group, we focus on the research studies of Controlled Microstructural Architectures based on Laser 3D printing.

Organ-on-a-Chip

Organs-on-a-chip systems are physiological platforms that reconstitute the critical features of human organs and the interactions between different tissues. They bring benefits to a diversity of applications, including drug discovery, toxicity testing, and disease modeling.

Hybrid Artificial Intelligence

Despite its expertise in human-like automation, artificial intelligence (AI) is still not good at common sense, emotions, adaptabilities, and so on. To narrow the gap between machine and human, the hybrid of human brain and AI chips is drawing researchers' attention. It brings together the best aspects of neural networks and classical AI.

In our group, we focus on the cultivation and functionalization of human brain organoids, and the research and development of related sensors, modules, and equipment.

(1)Long-term human neural cells culture on microelectrode arrays (MEAs);

(2)Light sheet microscope for quasi-real time observation of nervous activities;

(3)Formation and reconfiguration of neural networks using multiple stimuli (optical, electrical, chemical, mechanical, etc);

(4)Automatic environment responsive brain organoids.

About ZhongZe Gu

Zhongze Gu is currently the professor and the dean of the School of Biological Science and Medical Engineering of Southeast University, and the director of JITRI Institute of Biomaterials and Biomedical Devices. He is an elected fellow of the American Institute for Medical and Biological Engineering (2020), the Royal Society of Chemistry (2020).

He graduated from Southeast University (China) in 1989 and got his M.S. degree in 1992 there. He received his Ph.D. degree in 1998 from the University of Tokyo.
